Glenroy, Victoria

My town is kind of cool I guess...actually, it's mostly cold and dreary with spurts of manic sunshine and the occasional thunderstorm - typical Melbourne weather. Glenroy is a small ethnic melting pot in the North Western suburbs of Melbourne Australia, and is my current home town. I've lived in several of the nearby postcodes (or zip codes to some) in the recent years, but I've always remained within range of my favourite pizza shop. It's like my geographical reference point.

The real essence of Glenroy is the smell I reckon - a real union of scents and aromas. The spicy and sweet Middle Eastern spices mish-mashing with ripe and compelling peaches and nectarines from the Greek fruit market scathe the nose hairs, whilst across the road the Asian grocery with the mean Peking duck in the window beckons temptingly.

Sometimes the smells are not that great also…. For example, try to breathe through your mouth whilst on the train between Broadmeadows and Glenroy (there is something of a urination fascination amongst train-riders of Melbourne as I’m sure is the same is your hometown). The skanky public toilets next to the world’s tackiest barbers are also a must-avoid item on the travel itinerary ….. Hmmm…. but back to the good bits.

Glenroy is a combination of races, textures, colours, recreational drugs of addiction and excellent take-away. Come experience the blandness of suburb living in a completely different part of the world soon!
