Australia > Queensland > Toowoomba
Toowoomba is widely known in Australia as Queensland’s Garden City. Every year in the warm month of September we hold the Carnival of Flowers. The gardens of Toowoomba come alive with beautiful flowers, every colour of the rainbow. Toowoomba is really a very beautiful place. A short time ago some relatives of mine came over from England. My aunt and uncle took them to Sydney, Brisbane and the coast and then to sunny Toowoomba. Being about August it was hard to show them the true beauty of 'the garden city'. However, my boyfriend and I decided that we would discover the hidden treasures of our small town, in case we were ever in need of showing foreigners around again. Toowoomba having a population of around 90,000 people, we have several distant suburbs which are rapidly becoming part of town. Just to the northern side of town we have the lovely Highfields. Out that way lie some amazing rose gardens and small collection of shops. The Chocolate Cottage has numerous tiny cottage type shops with great gift ideas, souvenirs and other such treasures. You can sit out the back enjoy a coffee and a chocolate the views over the mountain side. A few minutes away is the lovely Cuckoo Clock Center, which is literally a shop filled with cuckoo clocks. Coming back into town over Mt. Kynoch are magical views of the lights of town at night. Picnic point which lies atop the Toowoomba range offers walks and views like no other. The restaurant and café are a great place to relax with spectacular views. Toowoomba also boasts ‘Eat Street’ which has a number of small eateries and restaurants to cater for all tastes. But of course the best time to visit is in September when the city comes alive with radiant colour. For me, Toowoomba in September will always have a special place in my heart. My sister was married last year on carnival day and it was magical. The weather was warm and the wedding was faultless. She had said right from the word go that she was getting married on carnival day and the weather was going to be perfect – it never rains on carnival day and it never will. It is just one of those miracles. That week in September is Toowoomba’s week to shine and it always delivers. People come from all over Australia to spend the week in the Garden City and they will continue to come for a long time.
