A Night on the Town
Riding down the Atlantic City Expressway, the sign read “Welcome to America’s Playground.” Denise was excited to be near bright lights and roulette tables. Her husband, John was a little skeptical. It was her idea to come to the shore so that they can test their luck. They brought about one hundred dollars a piece and decided that the Trump Taj Mahal was their first stop.
John pulled up to the front of the casino and looked around. He was not sure what to do with the car. A valet attendant walked to the car. He told John to turn off all music in the car and give him the spare key. He then gave the couple a ticket and told them to enjoy their night at the Taj.
“I cannot believe we are really here,” Denise said excitedly. She looked around at all the people and heard the ringing of the slot machines.
“Calm down, Nise. It is not like we are going to win any money.” John was a cynic when it came to things such as luck and good fortune. Originally, he sounded eager to go to Atlantic City, but the closer that they got, the more apprehensive John became. He was not one to just blow money; however, Denise talked him into it, so he went.
“John,” Denise said in a pleading tone, “please do not make this experience hell. We will win some money tonight, I promise. I feel luck surrounding me.” John just shot Denise a look but she was too mesmerized by the lights in the casino. They walked onto the casino floor and decided to play a slot machine. Neither of them wanted to put a twenty dollar bill in the machine and had to find a cashier.
Denise and John looked all over for a cashier booth. They found one but all of the windows were filled with customers. They waited in the long line and finally got up to the window. Denise asked the lady for four five dollar bills while John got two tens. They stepped away from the window and looked for quarter machines that they could play.
John and Denise walked around for about ten minutes and decided on a Blazing 7’s quarter machine. Denise sat down first and put her five dollars in. She played three coins and pulled the handle down. She got one bar, a 7 and a double bar. She did not get any credits. She continued to play until her five dollars ran out.
John stood over her and watched. The cocktail waitress walked past them shouting “coffee, soda, juices! Beverages!” John and Denise ordered hurricanes and continued to play. John took a seat next to Denise and gave the machine a try. He put his ten dollars in and hit instantly. He did not know how and was caught a little off guard. He hit the jackpot for $2500.
Two slot attendants walked up to the machine and congratulated John on his win. They told him of the amount of money that he would receive. They took his driver’s license and departed. The attendants told John that they would be back shortly. Denise stood there in shock. She told John that luck was around and she was right.
“It is not luck Nise. It just so happened that I pulled the lever at the right time, what can I say?” John said with a smug but funny voice. The slot attendants returned with John’s money and congratulated him once more. They said good night and Denise and John moved to another part of the casino. They looked at more slot machines but Denise decided that she wanted she wanted to play at the tables.
John pointed Denise in the direction of the blackjack tables. He gave Denise a look that said she should try it.
“How about blackjack Nise? I think you could test your luck there.” Denise was ready to hit the blackjack table. They surveyed the area and went to the table that was the least crowded. They sat down and Denise asked the dealer exactly how to play the game. The dealer explained and Denise was ready to try her luck. John wished her good luck and the dealer began to lay the cards on the table.
Denise sat at the table for about one half hour and believed that the tables were not for her. Just as she was about to get up and go back to the slot machines, she hit 21. Denise was ecstatic and so was John. She won $500 and played one more hand. She hit 21 again and this time won $700. Denise collected her chips and walked to the nearest cashier window. She collected her money and scanned the casino.
“Is there anything else that you want to do while we are here?” she asked John curiously.
“No babe. We came to Atlantic City and are both winners. We need to go home with our winnings in our pockets. Taj Mahal does not need anymore of my cash.” They both started laughing. Denise looked at the money in her hand and was glad that they made the trip to the shore. John grabbed Denise’s hand and kissed her on the cheek.
“Valet, here we come!” John shouted excitedly. They walked back to the front of the casino and went to the valet cashier. They paid and waited for the driver to bring the car around. When the car came around, John held Denise’s door while she got in. He gave the valet driver a ten dollar bill.
“Thank you, sir. I hope you enjoyed your time at the Trump Taj Mahal. Come back soon.”
“With the way this casino pays out,” John said smiling, “I might be back soon.” Denise laughed at John as he sat in the car.
“Sounds like you had a good time after all.”
“Yes I did my dear. Thanks for being the perfect date.”
“No problem. I try to be as pleasing as possible.” With those words spoken, John drove off and watched the bright lights fade out in the distance.
