United States > Missouri > Butler
For the first ten years of my life I lived in a little town called Butler. Since my parents worked as nurses at hospitals up in Kansas City my sisters and I would spend the weekend at my grandparents house. Coming back home to Butler was wonderful. Instead of Harleys there were tractors. Everyone would say hi to you. The thing I enjoy the most about this town is the wonderful feeling of freedom under a sky that seems twice as big as it was in the city. I also loved the wide open spaces of the pastures where the farmers let their livestock graze. The first thing you see as you get off the exit to Butler is a RV park where there are usually one or two motorhomes parked. Across the road is a gas station that closed down a few years ago. As you drive on there is a traintrack on the right of the highway. On the left is probably one of the tiniest airports you ever saw. There are signs along the road advertising a cafe on the square, and restaurant called the Flaming Lantern. When you pass the water tower there is a large sign painted by Butlers own artist. It has a picture of a pioneer couple and a lampost. You see, Butler was one of the first towns in Bates County to have electricity. The main attraction is the Butler town square. It has a wonderfully reconstructed courthouse. On the courthouse lawn is a gazebo where people can sit and talk. The street around the courthouse is red brick. To sum it all up I would have to say that I think Butler is a wonderful, and safe community. I hope to go back a live there with my own children. I am very glad that is where I spent the earliest part of my childhood.
