The sun shines through my lavender curtains, the cool fresh morning breeze drifts in my open window and travels across my sleep imprinted cheek. Wake up, another heavenly, lazy summer day in Chadron Nebraska. My feet find the floor, the same wooden floor I have trodden over for the past 4 years of my teenage life.

Stepping outside to sit on my porch and drink my Farmer’s Market bought tea, and try to polish off the rest of my novel, I look around. One of the neighbors catches my eye, waves, and goes on about finishing watering and mowing. The never ending cycle that is continuous of all of the neighborhoods here in Chadron. I close my eyes, and breath in the smell of the dew and freshly cut grass. I listen to the constant hum of the lawn mowers, the laughter of little children playing in their yards, and the older women walking their dogs and gossiping along the sidewalks. And I know that I am home, and that I am safe! I look up overhead through the never ending leaves of the Elm tree hanging, and see the clouds drifting slowly across the blue sky. A car zips past. And I think, I love this town.

Population 5588, the sign reads when you are driving in to Chadron. The next sign reads, Welcome To Chadron, Home Of The Fur Trade Days. Then the following sign has all of the tourist options that Chadron allows, let’s see…Chadron State Park 3 mi. Fur Trade Museum 2 mi. Wilson Park next right. And that completes all of the sights that are in Chadron, other than the college, CSC, Chadron State College. The college is located in South Chadron, and the high school is situated across the street of the college. All of Chadron’s schools are in sight of each other. In Chadron everything is in walking distance.

My two best friends and I have our weekly routine; we will walk the 4 blocks to the main street, which is where most of the action takes place. We walk to “The Daily Grind,” Chadron’s coffee house, where the second we walk in the door the girl starts making “The Usual Drinks.” After we have sat outside and talked to every person that walks by, and are finished talking, we walk the ˝ block to the Court House lawn, where the Farmer’s Market is, and buy a small bag of fresh peaches. Then from the Court House we walk the 5 blocks to the city pool, and lie out and tan, eat, gossip, and eat some more, and lie while the children splash us. Just to make us jump in and attack, get out and flirt with the lifeguards, lie down, and start all over again.

Another weekly routine that my friends and I have are going to the movies. The Eagle Theatre has 3 screens, the main one, which plays the newest movie. And the two side ones that play the older movies. We get a large popcorn, 2 large sodas, and settle in for the movie.

People may think that it sounds like Chadron doesn’t have a lot to offer, other than 5 fast food places and 7 restaurant, 3 parks, a swimming pool, 3 different schools and 1 theatre, there is a lot more to Chadron than meets the eye. Chadron is a great town where people can be themselves. They are accepted by everyone and where everyone is safe, and that is why I love it!
