When you think of a place in your heart you could always live, I bet it has the nicest people, no distractions, good morals, a place where everyone knows who you are and someones word is still there word. Well look no further than Cobden Illinois.

I havent lived there for several years, but when I visit now it is still the same as when I was living there. I remember in the morning we would go out in our back yard and pick berries out of the tree, fruits of plenty out of the garden and take in the morning air. We would go into the kitchen, make a bowl of cereal and add our fresh fruits we just gathered. Grandma was always cooking, canning or just keeping everything and everyone in line. The day hadn't even started when I looked at the clock. We were in no hurry to go anywhere and never really planned our time around the clock.

My brother and I would go into the yard to play on our tire swing that my grandpa hung from the tree that I thought was the biggest one around. We would grab our fishing poles and head to the water hole up ol' Mountain Glen just a short walk from our house. It wasn't even lunch time and the thoughts of entertainment came to us as we used our imaginations. I would run home with a rock that I found and show my mother and grandparents. We would clean it up and put in my box of rocks that I loved to collect. Grandma would let me help hang clothes on the line outside where the summer air seemed to make the clothes smell new again somehow. My grandfather and I would walk to the post office only a short walk from the house but along the way he would tell me stories of people, places and things that just made me think he was a man of wisdom. My grandma would have lunch made for us when we got back and it was like heaven on earth tasting her food. We did the dishes and it was now time for my grandpa and me to take a nap upstairs watching our television with only 4 stations(no cable back then)and we would drift away.

After our nap my brother and I would go into what we called town that consited of a museum that was open 2 days a week and a drug store that made the best cherrycola slurpies that we knew of. The buildings here all had old wooden floors that creeked from age as you walked. Along the way back we would play at the small park on the swings and merry go round. Thinking of how many people waved at us throughout the day made me feel liked and at home in this small town. Relatives would visit and the times together were incredible. My uncle Herbie would take us boys to several differnt walking trails and fishing holes that were not to far by car and we would have a ball. Some of my family only lived a few oak trees away but playing with my cousins was great and got my brother off my neck(he picked on me so it was a blessing).
Night approached and we would collect lighting bugs in a mason jar with a lid full of holes. We came in for dinner and again heaven seasoned my grandmas food. We would go into the basement and roast marshmallows in the wood burning stove. The times were wonderful.

I had a hard time sleeping cause I knew that tomorrow my Mom and aunt G.G. were going to take me to a new place and a new memory filled day.

The moral of my story is: Cobden gave me so many memories and never really any worries. A town filled with the nicest people and family that every kid should experience. To this day I still don't like the big cities and all there shopping malls with too many bright lights. I am so glad that Cobden hasn't changed like all the other towns I have seen expand. Sometimes expanding a town is like taking away what towns should continue to have and that is a place of memories that consisted of only imagination and love.

If you ever want to visit Cobden Illinois, near Jonesboro, then take in what it has to offer and try to forget that in this town there are no blockbusters or starbucks on every corner. This is the most unique and friendly place on earth to me. Thank you for reading my story.Brent
