I know what you’re thinking. “Where’s that at?” Gasburg is my hometown in Virginia. It lies very close to the North Carolina line, driving it would take approximately five minutes to be present in North Carolina. It’s a very small town that can’t be found on any map. It’s one of those places where everybody knows everybody and everybody knows everybody’s business. Despite that fact it’s very quiet and peaceful place to live.
I grew up in this town as well as my mother did, and now that I have moved away to go to college I still know where my roots are. I attended the public school in my area. There were four elementary school at which when you reached middle school all of them merged together and there is also only one high school. In my graduating class there were approximately 150 students. The whole county attended the same school.
Growing up in this town I feel that I may have lived a very sheltered childhood, I wasn’t aware of all the dangers lurking in the world. See where I’m from you can leave your front door unlocked when no one’s and feel comfortable doing so. You can feel comfortable as a female walking down the street at night alone. Your main fear would be a drunk driver instead of a rapist. There is little crime and most of the crimes committed are minor ones.

You may inquire about what there is to do in such a small town. Gasburg is situated on Lake Gaston. So if you like to fish, swim, water ski, tube, or just enjoy a nice boat ride that is enough to keep you entertained all summer long. During the other seasons there are school activities, parties, a couple of bars for those over the age of twenty one, and of course the usual movies, bowling alleys, and miniature golf. Of course to find these things you would have travel into one of the surrounding cities of either South Hill or Roanoke Rapids.

As in any place family and friends play viable part in your life, but in Gasburg I think we have a special connection because most everyone that lives here has grown up here and will probably raise their children here. It’s like my mom always says, “You may leave, but you’ll come back.” Everyone that has ever moved away has always came back. I guess there really is no place like home.
It’s here in Gasburg that I feel loved. It is here in Gasburg that I feel important. It is here in Gasburg that I feel safe. It is here in Gasburg that I call home and there is no place like it.
