I live in Harker Heights, Texas which is a small but populated town on the outskirts of Killeen. The people around me really love Texas for its larger towns like Austin or Dallas but I love our nearby city because it's not too large and it's not too small. In general, when someone is asked to name a major city in Texas, their first thought wouldn't be Killeen. That's because they've never been here. It has everything a kid could want: a mall, tons of the best restaurants, new schools and houses are even coming along as well. I moved here a few years ago but many of my friends have been here their whole lives. That's unique because we are about 20 minutes away from Fort Hood- a major military base. And as you know, people in the service have a long time keeping their feet on the ground too long. I've always wanted to grow up in one place for more than a year and this is the first time we haven't been rushed to pack up so quickly. That's a real blessing because I don't think I could stand to leave a place like this.

Even though in the heart of Texas, we don't have easy beach access, the lakes nearby provide natural swimming areas and in my opinion, they're a lot cleaner and private than any beach could be.

I know that our town is small but it has its share of history and progress. My parents agree that twenty years ago, this town had maybe forty houses, two restaurants, and a hotel. Today, I dare you to find a desirable location that's not in our reach. And if you are looking for something bigger, resorts and water parks are a comfortable car drive away. That's the beauty of being in the center of all the major cities.

It's really amazing how much our town is changing. It's finally being recognized, too. Authors are starting to make appearances at local schools and malls. The next thing will probably be movies sets nearby. But I hope it doesn't change or populate too much. I don't think I could stand it if I had to share but little-big town with anyone else!
