The hustle and bustle begins weeks in advance. Furniture market is our special time, the two times a year when our town seems to become important. We all run around, anticipation running through our veins. We clean our houses, pack our bags and get ready for those yearly visitors. We wait for the excitement to start.
The visitor’s flood in, their checkbooks ready and their minds open to new ideas for their growing businesses. We open our homes to them and our hotels. They walk about the streets, some with family, some alone, some with friends. All in expensive suits and fancy looking blouses. They smile and buy furniture because that’s what they came for. Traffic doubles, restaurants become a two-hour wait and our coffee gets cold sitting in the car on the way to work. Yet, the town thrives in happiness at the exciting week of business and importance. It’s become a routine, two weeks a year. Then, they start leaving. They pack their bags and make their buys final. They say good-bye and then disappear into the world. After weeks of preparation the special week has ended. The street traffic picks up its pace, daily downtown life slows, and everyone returns to their homes. The furniture stores take down their decorations, they close their blinds and their signs read, CLOSED. Everyone is settled. That is of course until the next furniture market week returns.
