Lake Havasu, Arizona

We are the hottest city in the United States. Some of the time. And I don't mean "loop earrings are in" hot, but "wow, I just fried an egg on the sidewalk" hot. Death Valley, eat your heart out. Lake Havasu's record temperatures have been noted on radio stations in New York and Iowa. I know this because friends who reside there have called me to say, "Hey, I just heard your town on the radio." Yesiree folks, we're famous.

This heat translates into skimpy bikinis, flip flop shoes, and recreational days on the Lake. If you happen to own a boat, congratulations, you're popular.

We're a desert oasis of palm trees and golf courses. Our streets make no sense, belying the typical box grid format of road layout. You can be driving north one minute, south the next, and end up east all within minutes of being on the same road. Every day is an adventure driving in Lake Havasu, and while you're getting lost you have a glittering view of the glassy lake, the serene mountain ranges, or the lush golf courses depending on which way you're pointed at the time.

We're a motley collection of locals, retirees, and college students. Where else can you see an eighty year old grandmother sunbathing by a flock of topless college girls except Miami? And we're not as overexposed as that Florida location. Well, the visitors might be. But our town remains a hidden jewel.
