New York, New York

“Home” is more than a simple birthplace or simply the area a person was raised in. While I wasn’t born or even really raised in New York City, it’s the place I dream of, the place I long to return to, the place that calls to my heart and beckons me back: It is my home.

New York City is strikingly beautiful in winter, especially as winter snows fall, which is the only time the city is really quiet. Freshly fallen snow dulls the constant noise of the subways and trains, of the footfalls and traffic, and at no other time is the stillness and silence so profound. Central Park is especially soothing in the brisk winter air, and ice skating au deux on Rockefeller Plaza is a time-honored tradition. Springtime brings a certain life and vivacity, as the entire population eagerly awaits the release of months of cold and snows that were, at first novel and refreshing, but that inevitably grow painfully frigid and eventually become only a gray, slushy impediment to daily life.

The city has a certain throb of life that is indescribably exciting and relaxing at the same time. Only in this city can a person be surrounded by thousands of people, and still be totally alone. Only in this city can a woman get away with being wonderfully, brutally rude and honest, and only in this city will men find that appealing and somehow thrilling. Only here will you find the great expanse of culture and human diversity, of museums, plays, and shows, of restaurants and varied diners, of everything you could ever want or need.

Some say this concrete jungle is full of people too entrenched in their own busy lives to be friendly or companionable, that the city is hard and cold and spits out those too gentle to compete. Quite the opposite, if a person has an open mind and a sincerely friendly attitude, they will find that New Yorkers can be as sociable as people in any other city or town across the world.

The most amazing thing about NYC, however, is the vast array of life possibilities the city offers. If you have the motivation and drive, there is no limit to what you can accomplish. The city rewards those who work for what they want, and simply being in a city full of such vibrant life is often reward enough.
