Salt Lake City, Utah

Ideally, Salt Lake City is not the place for me. For one, I am a non-Mormon living in Mormonville, USA. I am also Filipino. You would have a better chance seeing President Bush at a Dixie Chicks Concert than seeing another Filipino, or on that matter, any other minority. Yes Utah has beautiful mountains, that receives an ample amount of snow each winter. The problem is, I don’t ski either. I think the nightlife is lame, we don’t have a lottery, our sports teams never win anything, and the Great Salt Lake smells funny. I think you get the point.

So why am I writing this entry, might you ask? Well after years of bickering and pouting about my sorry little town, I have come to the realization that I love it here. Living in Salt Lake is a good balance for me. It’s not too big and it’s not too small. I used to think that I was made to live the fast life of a big city. I’ve been to New York, San Francisco, and LA. And while those cities are exciting and fun, I could never picture myself living there. I hate traffic, I hate long lines, and the thought of circling around for half an hour just to find parking is bugging me as we speak. In Salt Lake I can go anywhere within the city in a half hour or less and best of all, you don’t even have to use a freeway. There is plenty of parking, and it is rare that I have to sit in traffic. Plus, Salt Lake City is a safe place to live. The only people you fear will intrude your home are missionaries. As far as a small city goes? Please. I think Paris Hilton adjusted to Rural life better than I ever could. Anywhere a Wal-Mart is the most happening thing in town is not the place for me.

This is the fourteenth year I have lived in Salt Lake, and I don’t see myself going anywhere soon. This is where my friends are and this is where I am comfortable. Every time I go on vacation, no matter where I go, I am always itching to go back home. I could be visiting the Playboy Mansion, and still be curious to know what is happening in Utah. Sure we’ll never win a big sports title, but hey, neither will Chicago or Boston.
