Just a few minutes southwest of Charlotte, North Carolina is a small, rural community called Steele Creek. Steele Creek is a small town where everybody knows everyone else. There is one main road, Highway 49, which is a small two lane road that connects Steele Creek with Charlotte and Clover, South Carolina.
Steele creek is a community where the natives still talk with a smooth slow southern draw and everyone drives a truck or a four wheel drive. Life out there is in less of a hurry that that of our neighbors next door in Charlotte. The old men still sit on the front of the Masonic lodge and talk about Steele Creek politics. There are no government buildings there except for the McDowell Park Nature Preserve. You can hunt for deer almost anywhere is Steele Creek except for a neighborhood which was recently built.

Steele Creek is next to Lake Wylie which will be home of the 2004 Bassmasters Classic. The Classic is equivalent to the Super Bowl. There is great fishing and boating on Lake Wylie and many Stele Creek residents have fishing boats sitting in their driveways. Byrum’s General Store has stood in the same location since the late 1800s. It used to a general store that cut meat and sold household goods but now is a fishing bait and tackle shop. Even though the store’s goods have changed over the years the building has remained the same, even the original floorboards are still there and in good condition.

Steele Creek is a closely knit community and is a great place to live. It is far enough away from Charlotte to slow down to the pace of rural life but close enough to Charlotte to still have something to do that does not involve the outdoors.
